Seed to Sauce: Time for Pizza in the Gardens!

As the school year draws ever nearer, the weekly summer MY Place garden classes come to a close - and that means one thing: PIZZA!!

It's become an annual tradition to make pizzas from the veggies they grew all summer long, and it's always a highlight of the summer season.

This year, Education & Program Manager Maisie added some extra VegPowerTM to the sauce much to the surprise of the students eating it.  "I had made the pizza sauce with tomatoes, basil, sage, parsley, sage, and onion from the children's garden, " said Maisie, "and added a bunch of extra veggies that were donated by Cedar Crate Farm as well.  The sauce included: garlic, carmen peppers, shihito peppers, bell peppers, and zucchini."

"When I asked the kids how many veggies they had on their personal pizza, many of them told me (very proudly) that they didn't put ANY veggies on their pizza," she said.  "They were all shocked to learn that they had eaten a TON of veggies (in the sauce) and didn't even realize it!  Turns out you can eat a lot of veggies when they're mixed with yummy seasonings and, let's be honest, lots of mozzarella cheese!"

They also had a lively discussion about whether a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit as they enjoyed partaking of the fruits of their summer-long labors.

The end of weekly summer in-garden classes is not the end of the Seed to Sauce season!  Once school gets started back up Maisie and staff will be back in the classrooms making salsa and pasta sauce with students who had started seeds last spring!
